Wedding Party Attire - Dating as far back as 1066 during the Anglo Saxon days a bride and a groom had a "bride's woman" and a "groom's man." Later, old Roman law stipulated that five men and five women would witness the wedding, and in order to outwit the evil spirits that lurked, all would wear the same clothing so the spirits could not recognize the betrothed couple. These disguises tricked the evil spirits into letting the real bride and groom live happily ever after. Fast forward to the 1920's through the 1960's, the bridesmaids would often wear a pastel color, such as a light blue, yellow or pink - these colors were considered as close to white as possible, thus complimenting the bride more fully. Today all colors for bridesmaids dresses are worn, from rich chocolate brown, to a vibrant coral, cool purple, or a sexy red. There are no rules! But an interesting note is that the groomsmen are still "matching" the groom. Dark suits or tuxedo is generally the norm, so I wonder if that means evil spirts are still lurking around the groom? Hummmmm...

Don't run late for your important date:September is by far, my busiest month of the year. With so many weddings this time of year, I am always thinking about what could make them run more smoothly. I would say, without a doubt, the number one challenge is brides running late on the wedding day. It creates so many challenges that so many people don't realize. The photography time is cut short, the ceremony starts late, the ceremony ends later and then cuts into family photo time and then if it continues, it can create problems for catering. I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say, 'the wedding can't start without you'. Although this is true, it is such a shame to be in such a rush and miss out on so many things you just can't get back. The most important advice I have, is to be ready early with extra time to spare.
The first thing to do is to schedule extra
|
time for hair and makeup. A group of girls getting their hair and makeup done is never going to go according to schedule. You always need more time! But don't cut short the chatting and gossip, just plan for more time. I think the key is to look at it differently. This isn't just a typical day at the salon. This is an event! So plan to have some snacks and drinks. Have a bottle of champagne so you can have a toast with your bridesmaids. Think of it as its own part of the day. Invite your bridesmaids to join you for a pre-ceremony brunch or a salon lunch. Having everyone get ready together makes for a great opportunity to spend time together and to be ready on schedule for photos.
Once hair and makeup is done there are always last minute details that need to be done. These little things add up and yet they are often not thought of. It is funny to me, but this is always the case, the bride always has to remove tags the day of. The wedding dress, veil and jewelry still have the tags on. For some reason this is never done before 'the big day' so there is always a search for scissors. I have also seen many dresses that need some extra ironing. Unfortunately there isn't always time for this or there isn't an iron. Sometimes the dress has already been pressed but has become wrinkled in transport. And putting on the dress has its own challenges. It always takes a few people to help, so it's always best to have bridesmaids dressed and ready before you so they can then help with the dress.
The goal is to enjoy the day, the whole day! Avoid being stressed by being ready early and enjoying the time with your friends and family. The time before the ceremony is already filled with anxiousness and excitement, so know that you will need a little time to just talk and laugh and relax. Enjoy getting your hair done and have fun taking photos. It is the perfect start to the day, and you will be so thankful that is went so smoothly and you got to enjoy every second of it.
