Sun City Roseville comes to the rescue!
On Sunday, August 30th, 2009, a roaring fire ripped through the city of Auburn, California destroying acres of land, burning down houses and causing the city to evacuate for safety concerns.
The Ridge Golf Course and Country Club in Auburn was scheduled to have a wedding ceremony at 5:30pm followed by a fully catered wedding reception for 150 guests.
They received word at 4:45pm that they were to evacuate the grounds immediately.
As you can imagine, this caused great distress to the bride and groom who were suddenly left without a location to get married.
At 4:52pm, Jenny Giallanza from Sun City Roseville received a phone call from Sonny Gallardo with Exquisite Entertainment DJ Services and asked if our ballroom was available to accommodate an emergency wedding.
Without pause, the answer was yes!¬Ý Jenny jumped in to her car and flew over to the lodge (dressed in sweats and a ball cap no less!) and on her way managed to make 39 phone calls to gather staff and make arrangements for food service.
The ceremony site (our elegant Rose Garden) and beautiful ballroom was set with china, glassware, silverware, cake table, gift table, and all the other wedding accessories by 6:15pm!
Staff members from multiple departments (Maintenance, Activities, the Restaurant Staff and family members) all worked together to make this day extra special for Jodi and Pedro, our bride and groom.
Great job everyone!

Why is the bride carried across the threshold?
During the days of "Marriage by Capture," the bride was certainly not going to go peacefully into the bridegroom's abode, thus, she was dragged or carried across the threshold (poor dear... kicking and screaming, I'm sure!!). In even earlier times, it was believed that family demons followed the woman and to keep her family demons from going into the groom's home, she was carried across the threshold upon her entering for the first time. After that, the demons could not enter as she would come in and go out of the home (hummm, is this another word for "mother-in-law"?) Generations ago it was considered lady-like for the new bride to be, or appear to be, hesitant to "give herself" to her new husband, whether or not she truly was. At the threshold to the bridal chamber, the husband would often have to carry the bride over to encourage her to go in ("as if"!)

Photography Time Management
Having done many weddings I have noticed that without realizing it, many couples do not plan enough time after the wedding ceremony for formal wedding photos.¬Ý There are several ways to make sure this happens.¬Ý First and foremost it is important to always double check with your wedding venue to make sure of any time constraints.¬Ý If you book your venue for the day you are usually safe, but if it is for a certain time frame you need to plan time for after ceremony activities.¬Ý You should always allow at least 45 minutes to an hour after the ceremony for formal
|
photos.¬Ý This varies depending on the size of the wedding party and the family.¬Ý If you have a large family you should allow for a bit more time to get everyone organized. ¬ÝIt is helpful to get the couple to nominate a family member¬Ý (one for each side of the family) who can be the ’Äòdirector’Äô of the shoot.¬Ý That person then rounds up everyone from their respective families since they know their own family members.
Next, you need to coordinate with your photographer the time you are leaving for the reception and the time you have to be out of your venue.¬Ý¬Ý That helps them plan, with you, which photos can be taken when and where.¬Ý If you are having a limo pick you up make sure you select a time after the formal photos for the driver to arrive.¬Ý Too early and the driver is sitting around waiting and too late keeps you and your guests waiting.¬Ý If the driver has another pick up to get to, plan for the photo times accordingly and make sure you have booked the driver for a long enough time so he doesn’Äôt have to rush off to another appointment. These are fun photos and you don’Äôt want to be rushed by someone else’Äôs schedule.
Finally, discuss your list of photos with your photographer in advance and prioritize them.¬Ý If time runs short you might need to cut some photos off your list, so decide ahead of time.¬Ý Convey to your photographer which photos are the most important to you and which ones you can live without if time runs short.¬Ý I recently did a wedding where they wanted every family member in groups (aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) to take a photo with the bride and groom.¬Ý This took about 35 minutes and was about 75 photos.¬Ý We didn’Äôt have time to take formal wedding party shots at the church because the church was starting a mass service.¬Ý¬Ý By planning enough time and padding the time for ’Äújust in case’Äù moments you ensure that you get all of your photos taken that you want, and you don’Äôt have to be stressed about the formal photography portion of the day!

Take Time to Smell the Roses Literally. I see so many brides spending so much time planning and prepping for their wedding, and then when the big day comes they rush through everything and forget to stop and savor it. Even worse, is when they spend most of their day stressing out about how everything is coming together. If you know you're the type to be worried about every little detail, then you should hire a wedding planner, even if only a day-of planner. Wedding planners take the stress away. Make sure that your schedule is well spaced and almost leisurely, so that you never feel rushed. Even if you pad your
|
wedding day schedule, the day will still feel like it's flying by! When the day arrives, just enjoy every moment and know that if a little something is different than you expected, only you know. Focus on all the positive, amazing aspects of the day and you will enjoy it all the more. Last but not least, you and your groom should plan on stealing away for a couple minutes during the reception. I usually ask my couples to do this anyway, to get some of those romantic evening shots, and they always thank me later because they remember that quiet moment in which they got to savor what was going on around them.

Advice From Amy Nicole |

Two drifters off to see the world: October is my favorite month of the year. The leaves turn colors, the weather gets cooler and all things are changing. It is the time of year when I turn a year older and think about the new year ahead, now a year older and hopefully wiser. It’Äôs a time of reflection, appreciation for where I am in my life, appreciation for the family and friends that surround me and also a time for setting goals. I also think about many years earlier when a woman had a new baby daughter and how much that changed her life. And as with everything in my life, I could relate this to an episode of Sex and the City- this one just so happens to be my all time favorite! It is fall and Big is moving to Napa. He and Carrie dance to ’ÄòMoon River’Äô in his apartment. As Carrie heads home thinking about Big and how this move will change things, a leaf falls to the ground on the sidewalk right in front
|
of her. This of course, was just a fork in the road because we all know they ended up together. For all of these reasons, I think it is the perfect time of year for a wedding.
A wedding is an event that signifies a huge change. And not just for the bride and groom but also their family and friends. The couple makes promises to each other in the presence of these people. They often cry as they say these powerful words to each other and everyone listening thinks about what those words mean to them. Parents are thankful for gaining a daughter or a son. The maid of honor realizes she is now sharing the role of best friend and everyone is embracing how their lives will be different. The couple sets goals and they begin on a journey together.
I recently photographed a couple that are beginning their journey on a tour of Europe for several months. Their tour includes France, Italy and a stop at Oktoberfest. Now a festival of beer drinking and amusement rides-the very first Oktoberfest was a royal wedding. They will be toasting to each other and to their new life together at a celebration that began many years before with a couple doing that very same thing. What a great way to start a marriage and celebrate the fall!
The other day a leaf fell on my head while I was photographing. Hmm a sign? Yes, change is coming and I’Äôm almost a year older.
