Bridal Trends:

By: Angie Zimmerman, Heavenly Flowers and Events

According to The Wedding Report website, blue and green will be the TREND colors for 2009 brides.  All sorts of shades of blue have been popular since 2008… anything from baby blue to tiffany blue or navy blue to midnight blue.  Green is becoming popular because of the "green" movement; even though the color really has nothing to do with the intent (the intent being to be kind to the environment).  Recycle and organic are synonyms for "green."  I am seeing various shades of green, such as mint green (pale green), lime green and dark green dress colors.

BLUE Flowers: Ironically, green and blue flowers are fairly limited in availability. Some blue flowers include iris, delphinium (both hybrid and Bella Donna), bachelor buttons, tinted blue dendrobium orchids, blue bells, agapanthus, scabiosa, limonium, gentian, campanula, veronica and hydrangea ...I have seen roses tinted blue, as well.  But, that would be a special order that you would have to plan for way ahead of time.

GREEN Flowers: Green flowers include roses, carnations, dendrobium orchids, cymbidium orchids, antherium, calla lilies, bells of Ireland, hydrangeas, gladiolas, helleborus, hypericum berry, amaranthus, trachelium, ranunculus, vibernun, spider  mums and button mums.

Great Tips for Making the Big Day Easy on the Pocketbook
and Friendly on the Environment

By: Angela Dal Bon

Save The Dates

  • Email Save The Dates and Rehearsal Dinner Invitations.  You’ll eliminate the cost and waste of postage, paper & envelopes. Angela Dal Bon Custom Invitations & Announcements offers a Save The Date email design for just $50 (with order a wedding invitations package).
  • Have your Save The Dates made in a postcard format.  You’ll save about $50 on postage and envelopes.

The Invitation

  • Choose a custom invitation vendor who will let you increase your order in quantities of 5’s and 10’s instead of 25’s.
  • Eliminate the added cost of special envelopes, engraving, embossing, ribbons and wraps.  Rely on the unique design that a custom invitations vendor can provide on a single sheet of paper.
  • Stick to your budget.  Choose an invitation designer who is conscious of your budget and designs around it.  Expect to spend about 3% of your budget on invitations.

The DIY Invitation

  • “Do It Yourself” doesn’t have to mean do it all yourself.  Designing and Printing can be difficult if you aren’t experienced.  Choose a custom invitation vendor who will design and print your invitations then allow you the option of assembling them yourself.  Ask your invitation designer to teach you tricks for making the final product look professional.

R.S.V.P, Accommodation Card, Direction Card

  • Make your RSVP postcard style.  Save on postage and eliminate the cost and waste of envelopes.
  • Combine your direction and accommodation card.  You can provide accommodation information on one side of the card and directions on the other.

Favors, Place cards, Menus, etc.

  • Need favors and place cards?  Choose an item that does both jobs. Place candles, favor tins or boxes with your guest’s names on them at each place setting.
  • Order favors, programs, table numbers, matches, menus, place cards from the same vendor.  Choose a designer who offers discounts when all items are ordered through them. Not only will you save money, you’ll have a unique style and design that carries from your invitations to your event. Angela Dal Bon offers table numbers at no extra cost when you order place cards.

Why Should We Take Engagement Pictures?

Some couples may feel that the engagement session is a waste of time or is not necessary, though there are many reasons to take advantage of this service offered by almost every wedding photographer.
First, be sure to book your wedding photographer and make sure to do the E-session with that photographer.  This is your chance to really get to know your photographer and establish a relationship

since they will be with you on the most important day of your life, it is critical that you feel completely comfortable with them so that you can be at ease in front of the camera.  I spend about an hour or two with my couples in an E-session, listening to them, laughing and having fun with them and getting to know them all while photographing them.  This helps me bring their personalities into their pictures on their wedding day as well. This session is a blast, you and your fiancé can be goofy, you can be serious, you can be romantic, and most importantly you can be yourself in front of the camera.  This session will capture you and your fiancé and your personalities, going beyond the boring and stiff poses and fake smiles.
Choose a location that is important or meaningful to you and your fiancé.  Maybe it’s the place you two got engaged, or somewhere you spend a lot of time, maybe by the water or in the mountains.  If you want to travel outside of Sacramento ask your photographer if that is an option; this way your images will be more meaningful to you as opposed to going to a park and snapping a few pictures.  Another great idea is to have your hair and makeup trial on the same day as your E-session, this way you can test the hair and makeup while looking exceptionally fabulous in the pictures!
Once you see your images from your E-session you will be even more excited about your wedding day and even more confident in yourself and your photographer.  Once you have the images you use them for your save-the-dates, include one in your wedding invitation, submit one to your local newspaper (with permission from your photographer) and choose your favorite to have displayed at your wedding and even create a custom guest book with all of your favorite images in it.
Whatever your choice may be, I encourage you to get creative and go out and have fun with your photographer and you will get amazing pictures from it!  Creating relationships with your vendors, especially your Photographer is key to a successful wedding and will help keep you focused on the most important part of your day, the two of you.

Genevieve Stevens Photography (Photographers) People frequently ooh and aah over Genevieve's wedding photographs.  While genuinely humble, she admits that there are a few reasons her photos stand out from the crowd.  First, she credits a strong background in art history and a childhood growing up abroad.  Without always being conscious of it, Genevieve naturally gravitates towards images that are always artful and visually arresting.  While she will call
her work classic and timeless, she also seeks to capture the love, excitement, beauty and realness of a wedding day.  Second, she is one of the few photographers around who still uses some film.  She covers the whole wedding digitally, but for those special moments like the ceremony, and the bride and groom alone, she feels that there is no comparison to the look and feel of real black and white film.  These black and white images are a beautiful compliment to the crisp, bright and flawless images captured by her digital equipment.  Last but not least, she really pays attention; to what her clients tell her is important to them, to every last detail of the reception, to where the light is best, and to every beautiful moment of the day.  Click here to see for yourself: www.genevievestevens.com

2009 - What a Great Year to Get Married!

2009 is the last chance you have to be married in the first decade of this century!
The weather is going to be spectacular with a mild summer and we’re getting plenty of rain so the reservoirs will be full and everything will be green and lush.  There will be flowers aplenty as well.

Yes, there are a few worries about the economy, but, 10, 20 and 30 years from now all you will remember is what a wonderful time you had planning your wedding day and what fun it was to

celebrate with all of your closest people. This year, almost all wedding professionals are willing to help you with your budget, realizing that prices come down on everything when the economy demands it so a 2009 wedding is going to be easier to pay for!
A couple of pieces of advice from a wedding veteran of 25 years:
USE your wedding professionals for advice on wedding details and planning.  We’ve seen it done well and we’ve seen mistakes made in planning and scheduling.  Use our experience to help plan for a successful day.  Use our referrals!

As wedding professionals, we support each other and we’re always happy to assist you, the Bride and Groom to put together a great team.  Please use our expertise and experience.  It’ll make the job a lot easier for you.
(For those of you that are planning ahead for 2010, the first year of next decade will be wonderful too!)  The reason I know this is that, for 25 years I’ve seen EVERY year be wonderful for a wedding because all weddings can be wonderful.
Good luck with your plans.

Tips From the Pros

Bridal jewelry can be more than just pearls: Today’s bride tends to think only about the wedding gown itself and forgets to complete their outfit with the right jewelry accessories to compliment their trousseau...

Nancy Latta of “Jazzy Jewelz by Nancy” has some fresh ideas about bridal jewelry and is eager to share those ideas with you.

Certainly, natural pearls are traditional and always appropriate for bridal jewelry but why not consider other options? Cubic Zirconium (CZ), glass pearls, lamp work glass, faceted Austrian crystal, quartz or perhaps combining pearls and any or all of the above.  In Nancy’s studio and creative mind the one of a kind possibilities are limitless.  When you visit her website: www.jazzyjewelzbynancy.com , you’ll find bridal creations that are both timeless and trendy and always one of a kind.

Once the bride has selected her gown, it’s time to start accessorizing.  Since the gown is the corner stone of the trousseau, it’s important to have it available when selecting the perfect necklace, earrings, bracelet, and or headband.  Your gown will determine your jewelry accessories, whether it is a necklace and earrings or earrings and bracelet.  There are gowns that can frame bold and daring accessories and then there are gowns that need a more subtle touch.

The savvy bride can also stretch her wedding dollar by getting double duty out of her bridal jewelry.  By that I mean the jewelry you have selected to compliment your wedding gown can also be worn again and again, for business or dressing up a casual outfit.  So rather than wear the piece of wedding jewelry only once and putting it away, you will keep it active and wear it over and over.

The bottom line here is that Nancy is eager to work one on one with the bride and her entire party to insure they have the “bling” that is just right for them.  Nancy has a nice selection of bridesmaids and mother of the bride and groom creations also.  Whatever your needs are, she is here to work with you.

You’ll never know just how gorgeous your wedding gown can really be until it’s paired with the perfect bridal accessories... one of a kind custom made bridal jewelry by Nancy.

What Time Should Your Invitation Say? Everybody would like their event to start on time, when you send out the invitations, give yourself a little wiggle room. Couples often put the ceremony at: "such and such time," and this is often the same time the bride wishes to walk down the isle. Your best bet would be if it was a least 30 minutes earlier giving everyone enough time to get in place.

Terry Stewart, Lions Gate Hotel

Choosing a Floral Designer: Searching for a designer who will capture your personality and offer great ideas to compliment your look can be a haunting task for some brides.  Here are a few tips to making the selection process a little smoother.

Visit a local bridal show.  Bridal shows are wonderful avenues to seeing many designers’ work first-hand. You will be able to compare designer’s styles and also get to

know them and their services a little better.

Perform a search online for something such as ‘wedding flowers Sacramento’.  The phrase ‘wedding flowers Sacramento’ targets not only those who specialize in wedding flowers, but will also narrow down local designers in your area.  Another great resource is Sacramento Bride and Groom’s vendor directory online, which lists the best floral designers in the Greater Sacramento area.

Whether you have received a recommendation or have seen someone’s work first hand, make sure you explore their website.  Does their work speak to you?  Do you like their designs and ideas?  Do they feature a portfolio which displays some of their current work? Other helpful information will also be on their website such as pricing, the services they offer, and maybe even a blog with helpful hints and past weddings.

After narrowing down a few designers who appeal to your taste, schedule a
consultation.  Only schedule consultations with people who seem to be a good
fit for what you are looking for.  You don't want to invest your, as well as
their time and money into a dead-end vendor connection.  If it means that
you speak over the phone before meeting in person, any designer should be
more than willing to address any concerns you may have.

If you are planning on meeting with multiple floral designers, you must remember that flowers are priced based on many different variables which influence the cost.  The time of year, types of flowers, designs, and designers availability all reflect in the cost of your blooms.  Another item to keep in mind is that every designer may interpret what you are asking for in different ways, which influences the cost.  To give you an idea of different price points, have the designer show you photos of past work so that you can see the size and scale your dollar will get.  When comparing bids and making the final decision of who you will be working with consider who you connected with, who understood the look you were going for and offered ideas and suggestions to carry out your wishes.  Remember, you will be keeping in close contact with your designer throughout your engagement and up until your wedding.

Hopefully, this article can help you through your floral planning journey! Many
brides don't know where or how to begin choosing a designer, so we wish you
all well!

Audrey Gardemeyer, Botanica Floral Designs

Communication Breakdowns: When contacting vendors about your event either with a phone call or an e-mail.
If you don’t catch them in person, be sure to leave them your vital specific details about you & your event.More specifically include:

Your first & last name, the date and timeframe of your event, the locations of the ceremony and reception, your contact information such as the phone number to call back or the best e-mail address to reach you and possibly a good time to contact you.
If you are calling from a cell phone, be sure to leave your phone number twice. Cell phones often drop out and we only hear part of the phone number, or your name does not come through clearly.

Very often in both the phone messages and e-mail contacts- Information is incomplete or minimal. There are parts missing and it can make the difference for vendors to get back to you quickly and effectively.
In today’s technology based world with all the different means of communication, don’t forget the best way to get detailed information about your event from a vendor is to meet face-to-face, but the initial contact is also extremely important and should allow you and the vendor the best opportunity to give and receive information effectively.

How Do I Pick My Wedding Photographer? There are so many wedding photographers out there, how do you know which one to choose?  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Do you like their work?  Look at several albums and see if their style and the quality of their workis something you’ll be happy with.
  • Is their personality such that you would like to be with them throughout the entire day on one of the most important days of your life?
  • Are they a member of any photography associations?  Associations such as Professional Photographers of the Sacramento Valley (PPSV), Professional Photographers of America (PPA), Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI), etc. have codes of ethics that the member must sign.  In addition, they provide education that helps the photographer keep up with the latest in photography trends.
  • Do they have liability insurance?  If someone trips over their camera bag, you want the photographers insurance to cover it!
  • How long have they been photographing weddings and how many weddings have they photographed?  The inexperienced photographer may give you a great price, but do you want to take a risk at your wedding?
  • Are they willing to work within my budget? No matter how good they are, you have to decide if you can afford their services.  It’s probably not worth it to start off your marriage knee deep in credit card bills.

Advice From Amy Nicole

The Perfect Honeymoon: After spending sometimes an entire year coordinating and organizing, couples set off on a very important trip together. It is supposed to be the most romantic trip a couple will ever take together. Some even go on a second honeymoon because they are obviously in need of a romantic vacation and the title alone insinuates just that. Unfortunately, giving a trip the title doesn’t make it so. We would all love to believe that it is just that easy. It is a lot of pressure to think of the trip as the most romantic and most important. Then add to that being a newly married couple and what that means-it is a lot to digest.  I have found by my own mistakes, the successful way to take a vacation. Think about your expectations-how much fun you are going to have, how romantic it is going to be or how wonderful the weather will be when you get there. Now let go of all of them. Instead imagine that you will have no idea what will happen and you won’t know until you get there and

are in the moment. Then let go of any worries or responsibilities you have at home. Find someone to walk your dog-or whatever it is you need taken care of so you won’t have to think about it for one moment. Then think about what you really want out of this trip. It is possible that you will have transportation delays or bad weather. The question is can you still have what you want out of the trip if those things happen. It's all about how you handle it that makes the difference. This is not an easy task, but such an important one that often gets missed. You have to continue to remind yourself of what is important, what to let go of and what you need to do to be in the moment. We don’t always find ourselves in the experiences that we saw for ourselves but the problem is that we tried to see it. If the memory is how happy you were to be spending time with your new spouse, then it was the perfect honeymoon. The weather or the traffic won’t even be a factor. If you can do this successfully, you will realize that you don’t even need a honeymoon to make this happen. You will be able to relax and take a break and have that romantic experience anywhere at any time throughout your entire marriage. Ahh a great marriage-even better than the perfect honeymoon.
