Wedding Flowers on
a Budget

DIY Flower Guide:  Are you looking for ways to SAVE MONEY while planning your wedding?  Flowers are a HUGE part of creating ambiance for your special day.  From the bridal party bouquets to the mom’s corsages, the guy’s boutonnieres, the ceremony décor, and ultimately the reception centerpieces… Flowers bring beauty, elegance, aroma and happiness to the event.
By doing your own wedding flowers, I can show you how to SAVE 50-75% of the cost.  The national average spent on wedding flowers is $2,000.  That means you can do your own flowers for $500 to $1,000!  You can use the MONEY SAVED towards the food, DJ, photographer, videographer or even your honeymoon.
You will get a color workbook with step-by-step instructions and 5 DVD’s showing you just how to do everything from the bouquets to the cake décor and everything in-between!  With over four hours of instruction on the DVD’s, you can’t go wrong, but you will SAVE BIG $$$’s.

Lora Ward's Traditions Corner

There are many rites of passage we observe today that echo the past. Everything from the veil, rice, flowers and cake hold significant meanings. Old world marriage customs continue to thrive today - many are diluted, disguised and often upgraded.

The Wedding Veil - In ancient Greece the veil was yellow and in ancient Rome, it was red. Usually the bride was shrouded from head to foot which denoted the subordination of a woman to man. The lifting of the veil at the end of the ceremony symbolizes male dominance (oh brother!). If the bride takes the initiative in lifting it, she is presenting herself to the man , showing more independence (you go, Sister!). In early European history with arranged marriages, the veil served another purpose - to prevent the groom from seeing the bride's face until after the ceremony was over (poor guy)!

WHY IT BECAME "BAD LUCK" FOR THE GROOM TO SEE BRIDE BEFORE THE CEREMONY

Until relatively recently, brides were considered the property of their father. Their futures and husbands were arranged without their consent. The marriage of an unattractive woman was often arranged with a prospective groom from another town without either of them having ever seen their prospective spouse. In more than one instance, when the groom saw his future wife, usually dressed in white, for the first time on the day of the wedding, he changed his mind and left the bride at the altar. To prevent this from happening, it became "bad luck" for the groom to see the bride on the day of the wedding prior to the ceremony.

MONTH TO MARRY
According to an old legend, the month in which you marry may have some bearing on the fate of the marriage:

" Married when the year is new, he'll be loving, kind and true;

When February birds do mate, you wed nor dread your fate;

If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you'll know;

Marry in April when you can, joy for Maiden and for Man;

Marry in the month of May, and you'll surely rue the day;

Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you will go;

Those who in July do wed, must labor for their daily bread;

Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see;

Marry in September's shrine, your living will be rich and fine;

If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry;

If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember;

When December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last".

Keeping your guests cool.  With summer weddings upon us, keep in mind the comfort of your wedding guests, especially if you are having an outdoor ceremony and or reception.  Consider the position of the sun and the time of day that your ceremony will be… you don’t want the sun in the faces of anyone, yourselves included.  Rent a tent if your budget will allow for it.  You could provide individual fans and place them on the seats of the ceremony site so that your friends and loved ones can create their own little breeze.  You could also arrange to have some elegant beverage tubs filled with ice and bottled water (just remember to provide a recycling receptacle). Paper parasols are another great item to provide if there is not adequate shading.  It wouldn’t hurt to have some sun block on hand should your fair haired Irish Uncle be in attendance!  If you are not having a tent, you may want to set-up a cooling station by renting large fans or air conditioners.  Either way, have plenty of back up plans to keep everyone comfortable so your special day can be enjoyed by all!

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Favors

Your wedding is your special day so it is important to remember to splurge on the things that are important to you. So prioritize your expenses to figure out where you’re willing to splurge and where you’d rather cut back so that in the end your budget balances out.

A very easy place to cut costs is to consider making your own wedding favors.  With a little creativity and the right

product you will impress your wedding guests by giving favors that reflect you and your fiancés personality and style. Making your own wedding favors can save you money that can then be spent on another aspect of your wedding such as food, flowers or your honeymoon.

The Bride and Groom taking part in designing their wedding favors is becoming more and more popular. A do-it-yourself wedding favor gives you the opportunity to give a party favor that defines the two of you.  By creating your own favors you can complement your individual tastes or interests in a unique way and will personally thank guests for sharing your special day.  With beautiful packaging such as a specialty favor container, some beautiful ribbon and a unique label you’re sure to make a lasting impression.

Once you have decided on the message you want to convey your next step is to
design a favor that will complement your ideas. If your wedding has a special
theme, you can make your favor to fit the theme.  For example a fun Chinese
take out container or a “themed” cellophane bag for your candy buffet.  Another
option is organza bags.  They can be a simple and cost effective way to add
a whimsical or elegant touch to your favor.  There are so many options. Whatever you choose, the fact that it was hand designed by you with your guests in mind will guarantee success.

The final step is to shop for the components.  Choose your contents and then
head out to get your one of a kind packaging and ribbon.  Search out
innovative and creative ideas.  Come visit Wrapped All Up for your local
Wedding and decorating supply headquarters where you’ll be able to create a
one-of-a-kind favor unlike anybody else’s. Once you have all the pieces, you
will be ready to transform your ideas into fabulous favors. Keep in mind it will be wise to make the favor as simple as possible, so it's easy to assemble.

So, if you want wedding favors that are truly unique, take the time to develop your ideas and make your own! You'll save money, and most importantly, the personal touch will show your guests that you took the extra time and effort to personally thank them for being a part of your special day.

Tips From the Pros

Including those who can't make it to your wedding:
Do you have a guest that cannot make the journey to your celebration but you still want to include them in your wedding? I suggest speaking with your selected entertainment company to capture a phone recording of a special greeting, toast or message from your honored loved one that can be played back at your wedding. Friends who are in the military overseas, family who

cannot make the journey due to illness and more can be included in your wedding celebration! It is a simple and fun approach to include honored guests, surprise loved ones and personalize your wedding.

Advice From Amy Nicole

Show some Love to your Bridesmaids
When deciding on the wedding budget I urge everyone to consider the cost to the bridesmaids. This is something that seems to be overlooked or considered only as a dress expense. In actuality, it is much more than the dress and is quite a substantial amount of money. It is the constant chatter among friends this time of year and it is so sad to me that this is the talk-the money, not the couple. However, I think the solution is to consider a budget for the bridesmaids. Plan ahead what you think this amount should be. Total it up just like any other wedding expense and factor some if not all into the wedding budget.
For example:
  • dress $150 (not including alterations which most of the time is needed)
  • shoes $60
  • Hair styled $75
  • Professional make-up $50
  • accessories $25
  • engagement gift, bridal shower gift, bachelorette gift, wedding gift $200

total $560x5 bridesmaids=$2800

In addition to these expenses, there is the additional cost to the maid of honor for the bridal shower. There is also the cost to attend or throw the bachelorette party which is sometimes an extravagant weekend in Vegas or Tahoe. Then if the wedding is out of town there are hotel expenses and travel expenses. $2800 is actually a bare minimum total when it comes to an average wedding. These costs are unknown when the bridesmaids accept and it would be uncomfortable to say the least to decline based on the expenses once they are known. Of course the gifts are not an expense to take out of the wedding budget, but consider taking care of the added costs if the wedding will be out of town or if the bridesmaids have to travel to be in the wedding. Or consider setting aside a certain amount of money for each bridesmaid's expenses, for example $200, and then only ask your bridesmaids to pay for the rest. Another option is to pay for the dress or for the shoes instead of giving bridesmaid gifts. Why add another expense to the budget when the money could be put towards an already existing expense? Get it out of your head that these dresses are a new outfit for your friend and can be worn again. These dresses are a wedding expense. If someone happens to find another place to wear it than great for them, but most likely this will not happen no matter how cute you think this dress is. And don't worry about finding a dress that everybody likes-get whatever you want! Just pay for it.

Let the bridesmaids be there to celebrate, to toast to you and get the party started. Show them how important they are and how much you love them, don't burden them with expenses they can't handle.
