Wedding Cake - In Roman times, a loaf of barley bread was broken over the bride's head which symbolized (are you ready for this...?) breaking the bride's virginal state and the dominance of the groom over her. Once this "ritual" was completed, the guests would rush forward to pick up the crumbs as it was considered good luck. As an adaptation of this, today we have the baker package pieces of wedding cake into small boxes which are taken home by the single woman who places the box under her pillow. She will then see the face of her future husband in her dreams. In the 18th century, the French nobility would create a Croquembouche, which is a tower of cream puffs held together by a cobweb of caramel. This word translates to "crack in one's mouth." The newlyweds would attempt to kiss over the tower.
In the 17th century until the early 19th century, a popular dish was the "bride's pie." The pie was filled with sweet breads, mince or maybe a simple mutton pie (grossss!). A glass ring would be baked into the pie and the lady who found the ring would be the next to be married.
By the mid-19th century the multi-tiered wedding cake appeared in all its glory. Today the tradition is that the first piece of cake is cut by the bride with the "help" of the groom (that is why the groom's hand is placed over the top of the bride's hand while cutting). The couple then feeds each other from that first slice which gives us another lovely piece of symbolism - the mutual commitment of bride and groom to provide for one another.

BBQs and Fireworks Fourth of July is one of my favorite summer weekends. It has all the things that make a great celebration. There is lots of lounging time and laying in the sun. Then some swimming and boating followed by barbeque and drinks-well more drinks. And then to top it all off, after an afternoon with family and friends, some special entertainment that you don’t get to see very often-Fireworks! The weekend is always laid back and carefree and everyone is just happy to spend time with each other and take a break. We are also thinking about the real meaning and purpose of the day which is to remind us of our independence and our freedom. It gives us pride and a connection to each other and reminds us to appreciate that we have this day to just celebrate. It is a perfect combination of elements that create an incredible celebration.
Sometimes weddings become so much work and stress that we forget about their
|
meaning. Much like the 4th of July, they are a gathering of family and friends to celebrate, be connected and appreciate what the day has brought to our lives. But unlike the 4th, most weddings are much more formal and of course much more of an expense. But both have a very important meaning and in that sense are quite comparable. If you take what you enjoy most about your 4th of July weekend and bring those things to the wedding day you can create an incredible celebration that will be just the wedding you envisioned. I would expect that those things are mostly things that don’t cost much. My personal favorites are laughing with friends, enjoying the beautiful scenery and dancing(for me no celebration is complete without dancing). So this 4th and throughout the rest of your planning, I recommend a little more fun and fireworks and a little less worry and budgeting.
