As I stand here rocking my
14 month old baby boy, a peaceful calm comes
over me and I enjoy a bit of quiet time after
a day's work while he falls off to sleep.
My mind wanders and I find myself reflecting
on my wedding day. Since I have a wedding
video, it's easy to reflect on several key
moments from the day, those memories as sharp
and clear as ever. My wedding was captured
by my staff but the video wasn't finished
until three years later. You may have heard
the old saying, "The shoe maker never
owns a new pair of shoes." Well, I was
so busy producing videos for clients that
I neglected finishing my own for three years!
But here is the
thing: as I was holding my son, I realized
at that moment how cool it will be to be
able to show him our wedding video and to
see his reactions and to hear his comments
as he watches Mommy & Daddy from an earlier
time, getting married. A time before they
were even thinking about having a child,
when the excitement and the nerves and the
emotions were wrapped around the wedding
day event and all that it involved. Who knew
then that the memories we were making would
impact another life down the road? That is
the power of videography, it has the capability
to impact lives in the future. What an amazing
concept! It's not usually thought of that
way at the time of booking and planning the
wedding, but it seems to me to be true.
Remember, amazing moments become valuable
memories!
So it’Äôs that time of year when everyone decides
to start the New Year out right and do all those
things they keep saying they need to do. I’Äôm
not much on resolutions but I think it’Äôs a great
time to set goals. Rather than focus on all the
things I may be doing wrong or should do differently,
I prefer to think about what I want to accomplish
this year. I like to set my sights very high
and come up with some pretty amazing stuff. You
never know-it just might happen. And in years
past, I have achieved some things I thought initially
was pretty scary. So I was thinking about all
the engagements that happened recently and how
there are a lot of girls that will be planning
a wedding this year. I am sure the initial thought
is big and huge and amazing. I mean really, how
many people think I want something small and
sensible. Yes, there are some out there-but most
of us I think want something big and splashy
that says I am marrying the man of my dreams
and life is amazing. Right? This deserves a big
celebration. However, there is the very practical
and business side of me that would never go into
debt for this. But like many of us girls, I want
what I want. So here are some of my ideas on
how to have the big wedding but for a great deal.
Make a list of all
the things that you picture on your wedding day.
Mine for example-a hot guy in a suit in a nice
pair of shoes, friends and family, delicious
appetizers (I often eat more of those than the
meal), an enormous assortment of desserts, a
lot of cocktails and so on. The things that make
it special aren’Äôt necessarily the most expensive
things and I have found if I really, really want
something I find a way. And if it does cost a
lot, I find a way to get it cheaper. For instance,
Saturday is the most popular day to get married
and also the most expensive. You have to plan
further in advance and pay premium pricing. To
me Saturday would never make my dream wedding
list-it doesn’Äôt matter at all to me. So it would
be easy to pick another day, pay less for the
venue for sure and then get my pick of any vendor
I want.
Another major thing for me is lots to drink-to
me that makes a celebration. So that is an easy
choice to choose a venue that doesn’Äôt charge
to bring in alcohol or doesn’Äôt charge full price
for drinks. As much as I would love to buy all
my friends and family $10 martinis all night
I would definitely be regretting the decision
when I saw the bill. I would find someone I know
to be the officient. It makes it more personal
and much less expensive. And I once saw the greatest
photo of bridesmaids in dresses from Target with
a sash added to the waist and all in red peep
toe heals. It was adorable and cheap!
Once you decide the things that are most important
to set those as your goals. You don’Äôt even need
a solution right away just keep in the spirit
of having what you want. Not only will it end
up being exactly what you wanted but you will
enjoy the whole planning process more. Don’Äôt
get caught up on what is traditional, what you
are supposed to do-think instead about what signifies
starting a new life with someone and making that
commitment and promise. There will probably be
many things that you want to have that don’Äôt
cost a thing-like a toast from someone very special
to you.
So I say start the year thinking big. Have it
just the way you dream it. Write that list of
goals and don’Äôt hold back!
Something Old, Something New, Something
Borrowed, Something Blue
This wedding tradition is one
of the few that still makes sense in the present
time and it isn't darkened by old superstitions
about fertility and virginity (oh, those again!)
It is just a cute little fun tradition to enjoy.
The "something old" symbolizes continuity
with the bride's family and the past. "Something
new" means optimism and hope for the bride's
new life ahead. "Something borrowed" is
usually an item given by a happily married friend
or family member, whose good fortune in marriage
is suppose to carry over to the new bride. "Something
blue" symbolizes love, modesty and fidelity.
This old saying has an additional
line, "and a silver sixpence in her shoe." This
may date back to a Scottish custom where a sixpence
(an old form of coinage) is placed inside the
left shoe of the bride as it represents wealth
and financial security! These days a dime or
a copper penny is sometimes substituted. There
are a few on-line companies that sell keepsake
sixpences (replicas) for weddings.
There are many items to use for "something
old", such as a vintage locket with a grandparent
photo inside pinned onto the bouquet, or on the
hem of the gown. Your beautiful wedding gown
can certainly be considered the "something
new." A borrowed pair of earrings or other
piece of jewelry can work for the "something
borrowed", and check out these great blue
shoes a bride of mine wore... that's a clever
way to incorporate the "something blue."
