Advice From Amy Nicole

I heart you Valentine's Day!

Remember in elementary school when we would all exchange valentine cards? We would have a class project making holders for all the cards we were going to receive. We would decorate them with our names and a bunch of hearts and arrows. Before the big day we were reminded that if you were participating you had to give one to everyone. No one was left out. Back then it wasn’t even a day about that ‘special someone’ it was a day for everyone. I always passed out cards with conversation heart candy and I had this process of sorting them according to appropriate messages for boys and girls. It was a big deal to give a boy a heart that said ‘True Love’ or ‘Kiss Me’ because it was like saying you liked them and you couldn’t have that. So all the girls would get the candy with those serious messages and the boys would get the safer and rather ambiguous ‘Ask Me’ or ‘Be True’. Silly yes, but it was innocent and sweet and just simply a great day. It was one of those days in class where everyone was excited, everyone got along and everyone was special. We would head home with a bag of goodies and sweet messages and life was good. So what happened girls? Really what happened that made you all cynical and anti-valentines?

We say we want romance and then we send all these mixed messages about how we want it or what we don’t want. We used to be happy with store bought cards and tasteless candy and now we say red roses are cliché and it’s just a big scam by Hallmark. I know many single people that hate this day but the married couples are just as bad and skip over the day like it’s a trip to the dentist or something. When we were young it wasn’t even about a guy and now we refuse to participate if we don’t that perfect person. And then there are those that do have that person in their life and they say we don’t need a day for it, that everyday is supposed to be a day where you appreciate and show your love blah blah blah. We have a day to drink and wear green but we can’t set aside one day to celebrate love? How did this happen?

It’s true, I may admit to having some anti-valentine thoughts at one time or another, but those were angry teenage years when everything was lame and then a time I call the 20s which are thankfully over. Maybe it’s maturity or maybe its many years of being single, but I have come to appreciate absolutely any gesture of appreciation and love. Last Valentine’s day I gave this boy a card (a very heartfelt special card I might add) and he looked and me surprised and asked if I was really into all of that. Duh?! Yes?! I would be thrilled to receive any valentine or candy. I also happen to love red roses. I think they are classic and beautiful. I have never been disappointed with a Hallmark card though I do prefer an added personal message or homemade valentine. Chocolate, jewelry, romantic dinners-yes, yes and yes! A day where I’m told how much I’m loved and how much I’m appreciated and even more importantly a day that I get to tell people how much I love them and how much they mean to me- with an added bonus of gift giving and if I’m really lucky some crafty card making. Recap here: I gave you a card that says how great and special you are and how much I love you and am happy to be with you and there is something wrong with that, cliché about that or cheesy or something? Umm no. That’s not ok. And it’s no surprise that dude is not around this Valentine's Day and will not be getting one of my awesome cards.

So is it that too many of us have been affected by these super lame dudes? Have we been sucked into this half empty cynicism? Maybe we have spent one too many Valentine’s Days wishing we had a valentine so when one comes along we are over it. Or maybe we have spent too many being picky about not getting a valentine from a certain person so we don’t want any cards of any kind. Or maybe we have just forgotten the simplicity of the day and now we’ve over thought it and turned it into some complicated life choice. I’ve actually heard people declare they don’t celebrate it like it’s against their religion or something. When we first celebrated Valentine’s Day it wasn’t about a grand profession of love and promises. We used to be happy with conversation hearts. For one day love is as simple as a message in a card or maybe a candy that says ‘Kiss Me’. That is all. It’s that simple and we’re going to turn our noses up at that? Single, engaged, married-this is a day to celebrate love and we all know it’s worth celebrating. For those that are celebrating with the love of their life-all the more reason to not let this day just pass by. And to those that still don’t get it I say Bleh, Pffffp, Boo. Get your s*** together and tell someone you love them already.

Tying the Knot

This is an expression that is used often today, but has some unusual roots and the explanation comes from various sources. Handfasting is the closest I could find that is similar to the origin. In many cultures, including Egyptian and Celtic, the hand of a bride and groom are tied together as a symbol of their new bond and commitment to the marriage. Rope has been used as well as fabric sashes. In Hindu weddings, the bride and groom tie a necklace of flowers. In the Mexican Catholic ceremonies, a lasso is performed where a cord is draped around the shoulders of the bride and groom. The cord is bound by a cross to signify the couple being joined by God.

I did come across a charming demonstration of Tying the Knot. During the ceremony, the groom's mother held a length of blue ribbon and the bride's mother held pink. Within the wedding service, the mothers held the ribbons while the couple tied the two ends together.
