I've barely
begun my Christmas shopping but am very aware
that the holiday is fast approaching and
I need to get it finished. It is always a
challenge to me because I want to buy things
that are meaningful. And not just something
meaningful to the person I give it to but
I want it to make sense that it came from
me-if that makes sense. Then there are the
really hard people to shop for and I end
up putting off buying a gift to the last
minute. Sometimes a great idea comes to me
in the nick of time and sometimes I just
settle. It shouldn't be this hard. It comes
around every year and then for some reason
I look at it like it's a whole new challenge.
It got me thinking about wedding gifts. Specifically
gifts that brides and grooms give each other.
It seems sort of unnecessary to me because
I think that the gift is that they are giving
themselves to each other. But then again
it is a very important celebration and important
celebrations often include gifts and I definitely
agree with anniversary gifts. So I came to
a new found conclusion that this gift is
very important as it is the beginning of
many anniversary gifts to come. Much like
Christmas it will come every year and every
year a challenge to find the right gift.
But unlike Christmas it should be something
about the marriage and something to signify
the years together. I am a fan of the traditional
anniversary gifts-like paper, leather and
such for each year together and of course
gold for 50 years. You can get really creative
finding things that are personal and it certainly
helps with a new idea each year. For the
wedding gift, I don't know of any guide for
ideas but I have seen many and do have a
few favorites.
My favorite gift
from a groom was a new ring. He surprised
her at the ceremony with a matching wedding
band. They had planned on her just having
her engagement ring-or so she thought. He
told me ahead of time the surprise he had
planned to be sure to get photos. She was
so surprised and the reaction was great.
It wasn't a big huge diamond, that wasn't
even what it was about. I thought it was
so sweet and thoughtful that he wanted to
surprise her and made all the arrangements
to have the moment captured for the wedding
album. Hopefully he continues this tradition
every year with a nice surprise and if its
jewelry he can't go wrong!
My favorite gift
from brides to grooms is when they take photos
for him. It is something special that I am
sure they appreciate and something most brides
haven't done before. And if it is something
that they have never done before it will
definitely surprise the groom.
Of course I
have seen Tiffany jewelry and nice watches
’Äì and sometimes these are the perfect gift.
It just depends on the person. In any case
though there has to be a card. I have many
more memories of brides tearing up over
a card than what was inside the box. We
all love gifts from the heart most of all.
And sometimes written in a card is the
best way to express it. It seems simple
but it really is true.
This picture is what we think
of an ideal location for a relaxing honeymoon.
But the concept of the "honeymoon" hasn't
always been a post-wedding vacation together
as we know it today. The word actually originated
in northern Europe from a tradition involving
wine made from mead and honey (ahhh... is
this a good thing?). In order to bring good
luck, the newlyweds drank the sweet wine
for a month after the wedding. Since a month
was known as a "moon," this period
of time acquired the name of honeymoon.
