Wedding Cake Toppers - The wedding cake topper became popular back in the 1920’s and was especially displayed at more elaborate weddings. The topper would have been a bell, or a cupid, or a bride and groom and made of bisque or porcelain. The Sears Roebuck catalog had a full page dedicated to the "new trend" of cake toppers. Through the years, the toppers became quite elaborate. During World War II, wedding cakes often had grooms dressed in uniform, and companies today are making toppers in military theme.

Through the years, the toppers became quite elaborate, such as the one shown here from the 1960's.

Today, we have many options, humorous, whimsical, bobble headed, lovely Llardros figurines (which are reminiscent of the 1920's style) to the modern monograms.

Romantic Fiji

By Nona Mounir

When imagining a place with white sandy beaches, palm trees, beautiful coral reefs and seclusion, Fiji fits the profile perfectly.  Spectacular scenery, tropical sunsets and romantic waterfalls are some of the natural features to be found in Fiji's one thousand miles of pristine white sand beaches.

Captured in movies and books for generations, Fiji has just the right ambiance for honeymooners, or for anyone in love.  Escape to a secluded luxury island resort and stay in a Fijian style bure* cottage just steps from a white sand beach.  And with many intimate resorts to choose from, in all price ranges, Fiji is a wonderful choice.

With its friendly people, small intimate resorts and comfortable tropical climate, Fiji is a perfect choice for a perfectly romantic honeymoon.  Fiji is a magical place where you will be in charge of your own adventures, and there are so many wonderful honeymoon experiences available.  Enjoy a romantic gourmet dinner, private dine-out bure, or have a private escape picnic lunch.  Couples from all over the world travel to Fiji to honeymoon on these tropical shores or exchange their wedding vows.  You can totally ignore the islanders around you or enrich your own life by learning about theirs. You can listen to the day's events on CNN International or get out and see what Fiji was like a century ago. Those decisions are all yours.

A stay in one of the many Fiji honeymoon resorts will not empty your wallet.  Fiji offers a range of accommodation choices to suit everyone's budget.  Choose from luxury resorts with spacious thatched bures, budget resorts, private retreats, beachfront cottages or self-contained villas for more privacy and seclusion.

Nukubati is an idyllic Fijian private island resort embraced by untouched natural splendor.  Vatulele is the only five star island resort in Fiji with a PADI dive facility and resident instructors, and as one of Fiji's most intimate resorts, Lalati is the perfect venue for a wedding or honeymoon.

Whether you stay in a new luxury resort with plunge pools or on the remote and little known island of Kadavu, diving and river rafting, kayaking, snorkeling and hiking are just a few of the activities you can choose from to be as busy as you wish, or you can do nothing at all.

For those who want an authentic Fijian wedding in paradise and a luxury honeymoon vacation, the "Fiji wedding" resorts have romantic packages for every need.  Have a traditional Fijian style or the white wedding of your dreams.  If you would rather not bring your wedding attire with you, a traditional Fijian wedding might be your choice, for that extra exotic touch!  The heavenly surroundings of the Fiji Islands are a perfect choice for you to say your "I do’s and start your new life together.  A Fiji wedding day and honeymoon is one you will remember always.
If there's adventure in your soul, Fiji is the place to indulge it.  Find authentic Fijian charm and discover the beauty of these islands as well as YOUR perfect place to kiss under the stars and moonlight in romantic Fiji.

(* Especially in the Fijian tourism industry and its advertisements, the term "bure" is often synonymous with "bungalow" or any other detached hotel or resort structure.)

Tips From the Pros

It’s All About the Details When planning your wedding, no detail should be overlooked, and a good floral designer shouldn’t let any of the important details pass when helping you plan your decor.  Here are some points of interest when discussing the details with your floral designer.

Bridal dress style, design and color.  Your bouquet can have rhinestone or pearl accents to compliment your

dress in addition to ribbon which coordinates well with your fabric shade.

Bridesmaid dress style, design and color.  Finishing off the stems of these bouquets with ribbon to match the dresses is important.  There are numerous shades of pink for example, and getting the right one to match the dresses will look much better for photos.

Groom & groomsmen suit color and/or accent colors.  Maybe the grooms aren’t wearing a tux, but a shade of gray suit.  These are the kinds of details your designer will need to know.

Mothers-Grandmothers outfit style and color.  Does she prefer a wristlet over a corsage?  Is her dress too sheer to wear a pin-on corsage?  You may have to get back to your designer, but yet another detail.....

What is the overall atmosphere you desire for your ceremony? And reception?  A certain theme such as old world would have different container option than a reception set for a modern feel.

Linen colors, chair covers, upgraded chairs, are there any metallic elements incorporated into the tablescapes?  You want everything for your reception to compliment each other.  Discussing and seeing swatches of linens, and coordinating these details will make your reception look well put together.

Cake design and style.  What is going to compliment the style you have chosen the most?  What accents will already be on the cake?

These are just a few points of interest that you should be ready to answer when you meet with your floral designer.  You may even ask their opinion of how these factors will mesh with the florals you have chosen.  The more information you provide, the better your designer will be able to have your look come together.  To get more helpful tips and ideas, you can visit our blog at www.botanicafloraldesigns.com/blog, or schedule a consultation where we can begin the planning process: 916.673.8650.  As always, best of luck on your planning journey!

Know What You Are Getting In these very difficult financial times many vendors are looking for creative ways to draw Brides to their services.  One of these ways is to simply cut prices but Brides need to be aware of just what they are really getting for their dollars.  Be sure that when you are making comparisons between vendors that you are truly comparing “apples to apples”. For instance, you might compare three different caterers

who are offering an all inclusive package with linens, plates, utensils, glassware and service included and a menu that looks to be similar and yet there may be considerable differences in the price of this package from one vendor to the next.  However, you need to investigate specifically what you will actually be getting.  Do you have any color options with your linens and are they full formal lengths or just shorties that do little more than cover the top?   Do you have any china pattern options?  How many staffers will be on board?  Will the food be prepared fresh on site or brought in a holding container? How many choices do you have on your menu?  And don’t forget about quality.  You can get a steak dinner with salad and a baked potato at Sizzler for $7.95 and the same dinner at Outback for around $18.95 and again, the same menu at Ruth’s Chris Steak House for about $45 but the difference comes in the quality and the presentation. This will be one of, if not the, most important days of your life.  You may well need to find ways to minimize your budget but do you want to compromise on the quality of your special day.  We recommend attending a tasting with each caterer you are interviewing to be sure you are comfortable with them and what they will be offering you for the dollars you are spending.

Golden Gourmet is currently offering a special incentive to Brides who book their weddings with us before the end of 2009.  We will buy your Bridal party’s dinners at your reception.  (Limit 10 and minimum 100 guests).   Please call us for a tasting and visit our website to see our menu options.

How to get the most beautiful getting ready shotsPeople often comment on how beautiful my photos are, especially the getting ready shots.  While I believe in capturing the moment and showing people at their most natural, I am not a true photojournalist. A true photojournalist is not meant to ever interfere with the day in any way. The reason I say this is because when I walk into the room that the bride is getting ready in,

the first thing I do is clean up!  I go around and pick up all the trash that's laying around.  You think I'm joking, but all those dresses and wedding day items come with tags and packaging that creates a lot of litter!  And don't even mention the empty beverage containers or food items.  I then create the logo and mess-free area that will become the backdrop for the dressing event.  Nothing is more distracting than a logo in the background of a shot - even when out of focus and in black and white!  So, that was the first step.  The second step is that I strongly recommend that the bridesmaids, Mother of the Bride, whoever is going to dress you, already be in their wedding attire.  They don't need to be fully done up, their shoes don't even have to be on, but essentially they are the backdrop to your getting ready shots, so the prettier they look, the prettier the shots.  One of the last things I do is give the bride and bridal attendants a little coaching pre-dressing-the-bride: "Remember this is a happy moment and we are not scared to death of ruining her dress."  Trust me, even after saying this, I still get real emotion on everyone's faces, including a few moments of concern as the zipper slides up the bride's back.  The most important reason I say this is that I am aiming to get the bride emerging from her dress with a big beaming smile on her face.

A few other tips:

1) Wear something pretty while having your hair and makeup done - a simple button down shirt or elegant robe works really well.
2) make sure that your flowers are delivered to where you are getting ready, so that you can get right on with the portrait shots.
3) If your bridesmaids tend to be natural beauties that don't wear makeup or do their hair, consider treating them to professionals - again, the prettier they look, the more magnificent you look.
4) Save putting your shoes, veil and jewelry on until you are already in your dress, as these will make gorgeous shots.
5) Bring a pretty hanger for your wedding dress to be photographed on - the ones that come from the store are usually unsightly plastic ones.
6) Relax! Stop micromanaging, and enjoy your day to the fullest.  It will fly by before you know it.  Plus, everyone looks better when they are relaxed.

Advice From Amy Nicole

Hot August Nights If you are planning a wedding in the summer months of Sacramento you know it’s going to be hot! Even a ‘cool’ summer day in the capital city is a hot one. Keeping cool and keeping your guests cool and comfortable makes for a much more enjoyable day. And fainting during the ceremony is not just on TV-it happens! So be realistic and plan for the worst rather than hope for nice weather. There is nothing romantic about sweating in the sun especially all dressed up. There are lots of options that don’t involve a destination wedding-you just have to plan ahead and be creative.

First of all, if your ceremony is going to be outside do whatever you can to have your guests sit in the shade. Check to see where the sun is going to be during the ceremony. If possible plan a time when the wedding party and most if not all seats are in the shade. Whatever you decide, don’t

have the ceremony at noon! If more shade is needed consider a lightweight personal parasol. This may be easier to transport if the facility does not have market umbrellas. Umbrellas don’t always cover all the seats so this also assures that a guest can have shade directly over them. Paper fans are also helpful and be sure to serve water. A nice cold drink on a hot day makes a huge difference.
For the reception, think ‘cool and refreshing.’ Add a lemon wedge or cucumber slice to the water and serve fruit infused cocktails and white wines. When designing a menu think about what would be best to eat on a summer evening. Many caterers serve heavy foods that are much more appropriate for winter so be sure to ask for other options rather than a standard meat and potatoes menu. Cold fruits, chilled veggies with dips, shrimp cocktail, green salads, pasta salads and cold soups are a great option for a summer night. A seafood entrée is also much lighter and a perfect choice for summer.

So it’s on to the dancing and cake cutting and you can still keep the summer theme going. What better to serve with cake than ice cream! Have a couple of flavors and serve it buffet style with all the toppings. It is similar to the very popular candy stations-but with a summer twist and a perfect paring to wedding cake.
No wedding day is complete without the bride on the dance floor and if a dance party is what you want you better be on the floor to get it started. Once all the formalities have taken place, take off the veil and change into an evening look. A short cocktail dress will set the tone for the rest of the evening. Lose all those layers, loosen up, have a Blueberry Vodka soda with fresh blueberries and end the night with some great music, booty shakin and a salsa dance or too. (I know sounds amazing doesn’t it?!)
